Could Dean Ambrose Leaving WWE Change Things?

For the better part of the last 5-6 years, Dean Ambrose has been looked at as one of the main eventers in the WWE. He was a member of The Shield, a former WWE Champion, and has some high-quality matches and a few great feuds under his belt. However, Dean Ambrose never fit the WWE mold of what they wanted, he was always a little bit different than the normal main event talent. Since The Shield broke up the first time, he was more just like the third guy who could never do as much as Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns. Seth Rollins was booked as a top heel and had a nice long run with the title. Roman Reigns was the chosen one by WWE and who was gifted all of the great accolades and multiple title runs. Ambrose was in lackluster feuds with The Miz, Bray Wyatt, and had a very forgettable WWE Title run.

Did WWE book him right? Well, that is an odd question to answer on the surface. To a point yes, as he was in a lot of markee matches with the likes of Brock Lesnar, Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, and even owns a clean pinfall victory over John Cena on an episode of Smackdown. But, the reason I say no is simply because they viewed him in the wrong way. Ambrose was known on the indies as a crazed psychopath who just had a different kind of style than anyone else did at that time. He would even use that style in FCW before being called up to the main roster. WWE gave us some wacky cartoony, watered down kind of lunatic version of what Ambrose had once been.

The downfall of Dean Ambrose all started with his heel turn, the turn happened on the worst night and it actually made no sense on the time frame he did it in. Ambrose would turn heel after he won the tag titles with Seth Rollins and, at first, we thought we were going to get an off the chain crazed heel Ambrose. That’s definitely not what we got. Instead, we got a cartoony heel who hated the fans for a reason he never explained. He also dressed like a pimp and the way he acted made no sense for the reason he turned heel. Dean Ambrose is set to do the rest of his contract, putting talent over like we have seen the past month with clean losses to Seth Rollins, Bobby Lashley, & EC3. His contract is set to expire right after Wrestlemania, and with the way things are going, they might have him lose to Nia Jax in his last match for the company.

Ambrose will be the biggest free agent in pro wrestling since Kenny Omega, who just signed with All Elite Wrestling, and even further back to maybe Cody Rhodes, who also is a part of All Elite Wrestling. Ambrose has not been part of the indies for a good part of this decade so there will be a lot of fresh matchups that we have never seen happen yet. But, what does this departure actually mean to WWE? As a fan watching his career fade away, it shows me that money isn’t everything and if you treat someone unfairly or, in the case of WWE, treat someone as a cartoon, then you could lose them no matter how much money you throw at them. Roman Reigns is out with cancer, Brock Lesnar and John Cena are part-timers, and Seth Rollins is the only true top guy left in many fans’ eyes with Ambrose leaving. WWE shot themselves in the foot and, for the first time in a long time, the talk about pro wrestling is not good news for WWE.

What will Ambrose do when he becomes a free agent? Well, I think he will do what Cody Rhodes did, bounce around small places to get his name back out there. Will he show up at Impact with his former partner Sami Callihan? Will he stick it to Vince Mcmahon and join All Elite Wrestling? Or will Ambrose freelance for companies like Ring Of Honor, Major League Wrestling, Lucha Underground, and Combat Zone Wrestling? We have no idea, as I can’t remember the last time this big of a star has left WWE in their prime, but I will say that regardless of where he ends up, we will get to see the return of the crazed Jon Moxley; and in that instance, the winners of the occasion are the fans.
